    Patentscope News for 2020

1.Dossier Content of the National Collections of Israel and the United Kingdom Now Available in PATENTSCOPE September 29, 2020

[WIPO] Public Global Dossier Coverage  (OPD [One Portal Dossier] Service) [Last Update: 01.09.2020]

EPO       Patent applications filed on 01.06.1978 and onwards
JPO        Patent applications filed after 1990
CA         Patent applications published since 01.01.2008 [Note: Only limited sets of documents are available (examination reports and search reports) for applications published between January 2008 and September 2015].
AU         Patent applications filed after 2006
US         Patent application filed on Jan 1, 2003 and onwards, Prior to 2003, applications are available on a case by case basis.
GB         Patent applications published on or after the 1st January 2006
IL           Patent application filed on or after the 1st January 2010
    Soon to come: KIPO, SIPO

Example: WO2016185375 (Chosen to have both IL and UK as patent countries). In Patentscope, under National Phase tab, national numbers for UK and IL GB1718693.3 and IL255636 (the only national numbers listed in this tab),  are linked to UK and IL patent registers (with access to prosecution history documents in these offices).

In contrast, USPTO Global Dossier, in a record for WO2016185375 , lists UK and IL as a patent family members, but does not link to corresponding patent registers, because-UK IPO and Israel Patent Office are not participating in IP5 Global Dossier project; [New] Espacenet provides a direct link from GB2556465A to UK patent register, but do not has a record for IL patent application.

Note that Patentscope for the patent family WO2016185375 does not include US patent family members, which are also not linked to WIPO Public Global Dossier records for this WO publication.

    2. WIPO Launches New Search Facility For PATENTSCOPE Database to Support COVID-19 Innovation Efforts April 21, 2020

See WIPO COVID-19 search facility of PATENTSCOPE

The system allows find patents related to different technologies related to prevention and treatment COVID-19 , grouped in 10 categories further divided in total  71 subcategories. The system allows to run search queries which could be combination of appropriate IPC codes with detailed keyword strategy listed below:

EN_ALLTXT:(coronavirus OR coronaviruses OR coronaviridae OR coronavirinae OR orthocoronavirus OR orthocoronaviruses OR orthocoronaviridae OR orthocoronavirinae OR betacoronavirus OR betacoronaviruses OR betacoronaviridae OR betacoronavirinae OR sarbecovirus OR sarbecoviruses OR sarbecoviridae OR sarbecovirinae OR "severe acute respiratory syndrome" OR sars OR "2019 ncov" OR covid)

Note, that in order to run this strategy as written [which includes plural keywords], the Stemming feature should be turn off to avoid irrelevant hits with keyword SAR in addition to SARS.

    3. WIPO Contributes Millions of Searchable Chemical Formulas to Database at U.S. National Institutes of Health Mar 25, 2020

As noted Dr. Christopher Southan  at recent Patentscope webinar “Chemical searches in PATENTSCOPE for and by experts”,  an upload chemical compounds from Patentscope to Pubchem, created “Patent-to-patent “walk” via  WIPO Chemistry” See example in Sep. 18, 2020 post his Bio <-> Chem blog with some PubChem strategies.

Ability to limit search results in Pubchem Substance database by Patentscope source ["PATENTSCOPE (WIPO)"[SourceName] ] allows to use a power of Pubchem chemical capabilities to search Patentsope chemical compounds donated to PubChem, for example, chemical similarity searching. For Patentscope example,  theobromine compound, and there are  1555 compounds with 90% Tanimoto-based 2-dimensional similarity in in PubChem Compound database They correspond to 165 compounds in PubChem Substance database which sourced by Patenscope [. These compounds could be downloaded as SMILES and converted by PubChem ID Exchange Service into InChIKeys, which could be searched in Patentscope [as (CHEM:( InChIKey1) OR CHEM:( InChIKey2) OR…)]. This gives > 111718 [single family] unique patents in addition to 18309 patents in which theobromine indexed by its InChiKey YAPQBXQYLJRXSA-UHFFFAOYSA-N.

    4.  New in PATENTSCOPE : Patent Families And More Feb 4, 2020

Patent Families of PCT applications (See “Simple PCT Families”, 11 p.)

[Note, that Patentscope families could be incomplete. For WO2016185375 in example above, PCT application has US priority, but filed directly in WIPO IB. This simple PCT family does not include US members with the same priority but which are not 371 or bypass PCT applications.]

Searchable Cooperative Patent Classification (CPC) field

    Expanded national collection of Japan

    Stemming improvements

WIPO have recorded a Flash webinar (52 min) discussing these Patentscope improvements with Iustin Diaconescu, Head of Patent Database Section (WIPO) as a presenter.
