It was a busy 2019 for PIUG and we are gearing up for 2020.  You might have noticed that we have updated the website with a new look.  It is still in progress but it should be stable at this point.  Part of the update will be the retirement of the wiki.  There were lots of concerns over having 2 separate log ins and this will eliminate that.  We have made forums on the website and will be moving any useful content from the wiki to the web.  Please start using the forums on the web by clicking on the link in the main menu bar at the top of each page.  If you had access to the wiki then you have been granted access to the forums on the web.  You need to log in to the website to create topics or respond to existing ones.  You will need to subscribe yourself to the forums if you want to receive notifications when new things are posted.  We were restricted from automatically subscribing individuals to the new discussion forums due to privacy laws, especially in Europe.  If you have any questions concerning the forums, please contact our administrator at admin@piug.org.

Don’t forget to renew your membership for 2020.  Membership fees have remained the same.

Registration for the 2020 Biotech conference has opened.  It will be February 25 and 26 in Boston.  Please go to https://www.piug.org/bt20meeting for more information.

Registration for the 2020 Annual conference at the Caribe Royale Orlando (April 25-30) will open in mid January.  It will have workshops on Sunday, plenary sessions on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, and STN Patent Forum on Thursday.  Wednesday will be devoted to AI in patent searching with panel discussions after the speakers.  Please go to https://www.piug.org/an20meeting for more information.

Applications for the Stockdale and Kaback awards are also now open.  The Stockdale award is for people new to the profession and the prize is attendance at the annual conference.  The Kaback award is for a patent information project that has had a significant impact on the business.  Please go to https://www.piug.org/an20stockdale_award or https://www.piug.org/an20kaback_award for more information.

This coming year will also be an election year.  There will be a call for nominations in January.  We look forward to some new board members with fresh ideas and energy.

Thank you very much to all of our wonderful volunteers.  PIUG is a volunteer organization, so all of the events and activities happen because someone (or multiple someones) takes the time to have an idea and make it happen.  I have enjoyed my membership in PIUG through the years and greatly value the interaction with my colleagues.  I am a better searcher and a better person for my participation.

Thank you for a great 2019 and here’s wishing all of you a wonderful 2020.

    Martha
