Mapping Canadian Patented Inventions (Presentation, 18 p.)
Mazahir Bhagat (Canadian Intellectual Property Office, CA)
…CIPO is currently working towards developing several in-house solutions for patent landscape mapping using open-source and freeware tools. The objective of the presentation at the conference would be to present these in-house solutions and gather feedback from experts in this field. One of the in-house solutions involves a network analysis tool  VOSviewer developed in University of Leiden. The tool extracts prominent word sequences from the title and abstract fields of the patent data and their location on the map is determined by VOSviewer’s in-built mathematical algorithm such that word sequences that frequently appear on the same patent documents are placed within close proximity on the map. In addition, the relevancy of each word sequence is measured using the Kullback-Leibler distance and only the most prominent word sequences are retained on the map. Lastly, these prominent word sequences are further grouped together if they are synonymous using a word embedding architecture called Word2Vec.

Machine learning tools in patent searching - are we on the right track?
Heiko Wongel  (LinkedIn profile))(Wongel IP, DE) (presentation, 20 p.)
... the real breakthrough for ML as a standard and widely accepted patent search method has not happened yet.  The presentation looks into the challenges that still exist in this area, especially as far as practical applicability and acceptance by users is concerned, using the Intergator Smart Search project as an example.

A Fundamental Rethinking of Patent Searching Using AI: How Do We Proceed?  Presented May 2, 2021 at  2021 World IP Forum, Apr. 26 –May 5, 2021.  (presentation (with notes),  20 p.) (“In this presentation from the World IP Forum Heiko Wongel of Wongel IP working in conjunction with the developers of the Intergator system discusses the transition from traditional searching to machine learning assisted patent searching. During the presentation some concerns about current ML systems are addressed that still seem to discourage users: How do I know if I can trust the system?; Is my search reproducible? Can I influence the machine's strategy?;Why did I get these results?;How do I ensure secrecy over the Internet?”   quoted from www.ml4patents.com)
INTERGATOR Patent Search is a modern platform based on artificial intelligence for searching in a constantly growing pool of patents. INTERGATOR Patent Search technology is already being used today as a pilot solution at the German Patent and Trademark Office (DPMA); Use for patent searches: (1) State of the art: holistic concept search for thematically relevant patents; (2) Novelty:  searching for similar applications by “putting them into a context of content”, “not by primarily indexing by the terms used”;  (3) Validity: integration [patent search results with] …additional information sources; (4) FTO: search for active and already expired patents; (5) Patent Monitoring: Applies various solutions, filters and facets for  the targeted monitoring of the market environment; (6) Monitoring Patent Families and Legal Status: thematic context search for documents with thematic proximity within clusters based on terms used in document; (7) Review of Own Citations: intuitive search options to find possible infringements.

    8:00-8:30 AM ET | 2:00-2:30 PM CET
AI – Who is in control and why is that important?
Nils Newman (Search Technology, USA) (Presentation, 15 p.)
...This presentation looks at three aspects of current AI research that might actually be useful [for Subject Matter Experts (SMEs)]: Composite AI, Generative AI, and Small Data. These three approaches have the capacity to reduce the distance between AI systems and SMEs by allowing experts to have more local control and input into the behavior of AI systems.

    8:30-9:00 AM ET | 2:30-3:00 PM CET
Best practice on new intelligent tools in IP management and the ethical dilemma of using AI
Linus Wretblad, QPIP (IPscreener / Uppdragshuset, SE) (Presentation, n/a)
… the use of AI also raises new concerns regarding the transparency of the expected usability and reliability. This presentation will elaborate around some the associated questions; the impact of the training data, the black box symptoms, verification of performance and privacy considerations when using AI. … …also some insights to best practice AI search tool and how to take control of the process for better efficiency.

There are no good Corona news from the Côte d'Azur .. the German Government has declared the area as a high risk area. That means that attendees from Germany must stay a minimum of five days under quarantine upon return. That explains why I have received only registrations for a virtual conference and “The show must go on-line - again”
This encouraging phrase from show biz tells us that whatever has been planned or scheduled must be carried out, no matter what obstacles have gotten in the way. Nothing’s gonna stop us now …
The program is looking good. Book now and save some money … More info @ www.ai-sdv.com

Multiple bookings: Companies that register 3 people from the same firm will only pay two registrations. Bookings for multiple attendees must be received at the same time and be invoiced on the same invoice. Multiple bookings can be done online or ask for the booking by contacting office@haxel.com.
