EPO Webinars on patent landscapes of future and emerging technologies, Feb. 2, 4, 8, and 11, 2021 at 8:00 AM EST (GMT-05:00) | 2:00 PM CET (GMT+01:00)
EPO is offer in February 2020 (2, 4 and 8 and 11) four webinars on future and emerging technologies: CAR immunotherapy, Quantum simulation, 4D printing, and Graphene in healthcare based on EPO Patent Insight Reports (patent landscape studies). (Note, EPO Patent Insight Reports has been discussed at an EPO Workshop at 2019 PIUG Annual Conference in May 2019).
About EPO patent insight reportsOur patent insight reports focus on future and emerging technologies... They are designed to provide valuable insights into these potentially disruptive technologies.
... For each report, we develop a search strategy, using unique attributes of EPO data such as classification (CPC), citations and patent families. The search strategy is then applied, optimising both recall and precision, to create a technology-specific dataset based on EPO data. The resulting reports act as "snapshots" of emerging technologies, taken in the light of patent data. https://www.epo.org/searching-for-patents/business/patent-insight-reports.html
Future and emerging technologies CAR immunotherapy – beyond T-cell Monday, February 1, 2021 8:00 AM EST | 2:00 PM CET (Registration link)
Presenters: Dr. Björn Jürgens, Dr. Nigel Clarke & Dominique Manu (EPO)
Description: CAR [chimeric antigen receptor] T-cell immunotherapy is a rapidly evolving technology in treating some cancers. We have updated our 2017 study to review the current state of development. We discovered that applications of CAR T-cell technology have extended beyond the boundaries on which we reported 3 years ago. Patent publications are an obvious and unique source of data regarding technological change. Especially in emerging and research-intensive sectors, patent information offers a basis for analysis where other data are limited. Statistical analyses of patent filings and publications can reveal valuable information for monitoring the evolution of an emerging technological field like CAR Immunology.

Future and emerging technologies - quantum simulation (Thursday, February 4, 2021, 8:00 am EST | 2:00 PM CET)
Presenters: Nigel Clarke, Andreas Gröger, Björn Jürgen
Description: The quantum technology field is conventionally divided into 4 sub fields: quantum sensing and metrology, quantum simulation, quantum computing, and quantum computing. We have already studied quantum sensing and metrology [See additional info below]. Our most recent patent analytical study covers second generation quantum simulation.

Future and emerging technologies - 4D printing (Thursday, February 8, 2021, 8:00 am EST | 2:00 PM CET)
Presenters: Nigel Clarke , Björn Jürgens, Judy Ceulemans
Description: Additive manufacturing (AM) or 3D printing as an emerging technology has entered the public consciousness over recent years. AM is considered to be one of the core technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. However, AM is continually breaking new ground and four-dimensional (4D) printing is frontier AM technology. 4D printing involves 3D printed objects that can self-assemble or reshape themselves over time. 4D printed products can change shape, colour or size to suit particular applications after first being made by “conventional” additive manufacturing. Statistical analyses of patent filings and publications can be helpful in monitoring developments in emerging technological fields such as 4D printing.

Future and emerging technologies - graphene in healthcare (February 11, 2020, 8 am EST | 2 pm CET)
Presenters: Nigel Clarke & TBD
Description: Graphene is an allotrope of carbon and is an extensive two-dimensional planar layer of carbon atoms, arranged hexagonally. Graphene was first isolated 15 years ago. Since then, R&D has identified many areas of application of the material. In 2019, we reported on the application of graphene in composite materials as described by patent publications. Our latest study is on the use of graphene in healthcare. Statistical analyses of patent filings and publications can be helpful in monitoring developments in emerging technological fields such as the use of graphene in healthcare. However, to make the analysis manageable, we have narrowed down this very large field to applications of graphene in biosensors and bioimplants.
