Call for Papers: PIUG 2016 Biotechnology Conference

The PIUG Biotechnology Conference Committee has placed a call for papers for their tenth annual conference with the theme "Preparing Your Comprehensive Biotech Search: What Experts Do Differently." The conference focuses on best practices for patent information professionals who specialize in biotechnology search and analysis. It will be held February 22-24, 2016 at the Embassy Suites Boston at Logan Airport.

The program committee is interested in presentations that

Show how scientific resources help biotech patent searchers develop and maintain their scientific knowledge for pre-search strategy creation
Illustrate how work product supports or is a component of business decisions
Use of patent information as competitive intelligence resource
Utilize quality value-adds such as visualizations of data, presentation or organization of the reports and use of patents as competitive intelligence
Discuss a specific search scenario with strategy, databases used and results identified

All topics related to biotechnology patent information research will be considered.

Interested speakers should submit: speaker name, brief biography, contact information, presentation title and a 100-200 word abstract to: alison.taylor@abbott.com and gregory.roland@novartis.com by September 30, 2015.

The Association of Independent Information Professionals (AIIP) Conference Committee is seeking proposals from PIUG Members who wish to share their expertise at AIIP’s 30th Annual Conference. AIIP is a sister organization to PIUG. The Annual Conference theme is "Partnering for Success." It will be held April 7-10, 2016 at the Omni William Penn Hotel in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The AIIP Annual Conference is the premier event for info-centric, entrepreneurial, independent professionals and attracts an international audience. Attendees come to the conference to hone their technical and research skills, get tips on running a business, and make business connections.

USPTO-EPO CPC Annual Meeting and CPC Workshop to be Held in Conjunction with the PIUG 2015 Annual Conference

PIUG is honored to announce that the USPTO-EPO CPC Annual Meeting with Industry Users will be held just prior to this year’s PIUG 2015 Annual Conference! We considered this quite an honor for PIUG, a wonderful opportunity for PIUG Conference attendees.

The CPC Annual Meeting will be held on Friday 1 May at the PIUG Annual Conference hotel, the Westin Lombard Yorktown Center, from 9 AM to 5 PM. Please find attached the signed invitation letter from the USPTO Commissioner for Patents and a draft agenda for the meeting.

The CPC Annual Meeting and the PIUG Annual Conference are independent events; attendance at one is not a prerequisite for attendance at the other.

The CPC workshop is still scheduled for Thursday, May 7th at the PIUG Annual Conference.

There is no cost to attend CPC Annual Meeting, but attendees must register in advance by sending an email to directly to Christopher Kim (christopher.kim@uspto.gov). Questions regarding the CPC Annual Meeting should also be addressed to Chris.

This workshop will explain the fundamentals of patent law, the meaning of terminology used in patent databases and the significance of patent laws to searching and reporting patent information. This is the underlying framework that usually "goes without saying" when patent searchers are trained.

Topics will include the conditions for patentability, ownership and assignment of patent rights, priority and the Paris Convention, patenting procedures, patent families, and variability among the patent laws of the United States and other patenting authorities, and will include recent changes that may affect patent searches.

Call for Stu Kaback Business Impact Award Applications

The purpose of the Stu Kaback Business Impact Award is to recognize the achievements of an individual or a team of individuals who, in performing as patent information professionals, have made a distinct impact on an organization such as, but not limited to, a corporation, university, government agency, non-government organization, or a non-profit organization. A patent information professional for the purpose of this award is a person who searches, analyzes, organizes and/or disseminates patent information, or who designs patent information retrieval systems. A description of the award and the application process is provided below. I encourage you to consider applying for this prestigious award or to nominate a colleague who you believe has had a distinct impact on your organization.

Award Package

The PIUG-sponsored award consists of US$1500.00, a commemorative keepsake, and gratis registration at the PIUG 2015 Annual Conference, an international conference for patent information professionals. If a team is selected as the award recipient, the US$1500.00 will be divided equally amongst the team members and each member will receive a commemorative keepsake. The gratis registration will be awarded to a team representative, as designated by the team, who will be presented with the award during the Gala Dinner at the PIUG 2015 Annual Conference.

Application Process Summary

Award applicants may either be self-nominated or nominated by another. If a team is nominated, the team members may be from the same organization or from different organizations. If you wish to nominate a patent information professional or a team of patent information professionals for the award, you will need to contact the nominee(s), as the award application requires their input.

The deadline for applications for the 2015 Stu Kaback Business Impact Award is 20 February 2015. Send completed applications to secretary@ piug.org.

Examples of situations worthy of nomination include, but are not limited to:

performance of a patent landscaping project which helped an organization successfully manage a merger, acquisition or partnership;

a patent validity search which helped a company avoid or support a major lawsuit, or an opposition or revocation proceeding critical to the organization;

the development of a new tool or database involving patent information which helped an organization expand into a new market;

providing assistance to an organization by way of an advisory board to improve an existing product or service involving patent information; or

assisting a project team to develop new ideas and explore their patentability, which led to a new product, process or service of the organization.

The Patent Information Users Group Northeast Conference Committee is pleased to announce the call for papers for the PIUG Northeast 2014 Conference to be held on Tuesday, September 30 at the Heldrich Hotel, New Brunswick, New Jersey.

We are interested in papers from all sectors of the patent information community, including but not limited to, corporations, patent offices, law firms, universities and other affiliates, on the following, or related, topics:

Best practices in patent searching, analyzing and reporting. We want to hear from patent information professionals who are willing to share their best practices for searching, reporting and analysis of patent information. Independent patent information contractors and consultants with previous experience at multiple companies are especially encouraged to participate in this area. Talks on Markush structure searching, mechanical engineering, medical devices and biotechnology are of specific interest.
Real life examples of how patent research and analysis has been successfully applied to obtain useful information for traditional needs such as to support and answer legal and/or technical questions. Talks about either data/text mining and/or data visualization are particularly encouraged.
Specific techniques to ensure success, including but not limited to, the customer reference interview, knowledge sharing with colleagues, key research and analysis tools to use in various technology areas, following-up with customers, identifying and reporting key value drivers to management. Corporate patent analysts, patent information managers or independent consultants are especially encouraged to submit papers in this area.
Sample reports in various technology areas, e.g., suggestions and details for what to include and/or what to exclude from written or oral reports. What do you put in your reports, or leave out, what are the caveats and limitations?
Procedural or other changes for companies as a result of the America Invents Act would also be of interest. We are also interested in basic information or updates on U.S. or foreign patent law as well as papers from other patent information customers (e.g. research and development managers, licensing executives and others) who would like to outline their usual needs and expectations for patent analysis.
Patent office employees are also encouraged to submit abstracts relating to patent information systems, challenges or policies and related topics.

The PIUG-NE Conference Committee is pleased to announce the call for papers and the call for the roundtable discussion topics for the PIUG Northeast 2013 Conference to be held on Tuesday, October 1 at the Heldrich Hotel, New Brunswick, New Jersey.

Please email an abstract with your idea(s) as soon as possible and by June 21, 2013 to Lucy Akers (lucy.akers @ gmail.com).

Papers from all sectors of the patent information community are encouraged including but not limited to, corporations, patent offices, law firms, universities and other affiliates, on the following topics:

Best practices in patent searching, reporting and analyzing. We want to hear from patent information professionals who are willing to share their best practices for searching, reporting and analysis of patent information. Independent patent information contractors and consultants with previous experience at multiple companies are especially encouraged to participate in this area. Talks on Markush structure searching, mechanical engineering and medical devices are of specific interest.

'Real life' examples of how patent research and analysis has been successfully applied to obtain useful information for traditional needs such as to support and answer legal and/or technical questions. Talks about either data/text mining and/or data visualization are particularly encouraged.

Specific techniques to ensure success, including but not limited to, the customer reference interview, knowledge sharing with colleagues, key research and analysis tools to use in various technology areas, following-up with customers, identifying and reporting key value drivers to management. Corporate patent analysts, patent information managers or independent consultants are especially encouraged to submit papers in this area.
Sample reports in various technology areas, e.g., suggestions and details for what to include and/or what to exclude from written or oral reports. What do you put in your reports, or leave out, what are the caveats and limitations?

Procedural or other changes for companies as a result of the America Invents Act would also be of interest. We are also interested in basic information or updates on U.S. or foreign patent law as well as papers from other patent information customers (e.g. R&D managers, licensing executives and others) who would like to outline their usual needs and expectations for patent analysis.
Patent office employees are also encouraged to submit abstracts relating to patent information systems, challenges or policies and related topics.

General Guidelines for submitting proposal/topic/ideas

Send your paper title, abstract (100-200 words), proposed speaker name, affiliation, brief biography and full contact information.
Presentations are typically ~30 mins in length
If you need extra time to obtain your management approval of your paper, please let us know by the June 14, 2013 deadline and if possible provide the topic title &/or few sentences that we can consider in the interim.
If you would like to make a recommend a speaker on a particular topic or suggest another topic of interest, we would appreciate hearing from you. Please do not hesitate to contact the 2013 PIUG NE Conference organizers, listed below, with your views.
Further news about the program and updates regarding the conference will be posted on the PIUG Discussion Forum (PIUG-DF) and on the PIUG web site at www.piug.org.

The organizers reserve the right to accept abstracts at their discretion in order to assemble the best possible program. Invited speakers may take precedence over other speakers.

Inaugural Stu Kaback Business Impact Award awarded to Carol E. Bachmann

The Stu Kaback Award recognizes the achievements of an individual or a team of individuals who, in performing as a patent information professional, has made a distinct impact on his or her organization. Nominations for the award are received from the global patent information community.

This year’s recipient, Carol Bachman, is an Advanced Technical Specialist at the Information Research & Solution division of 3M. Carol was selected as the recipient of the Award in recognition of her passion and dedication in creating a current awareness patent tools and databases that support 3M in its business decisions.

The award was presented at the PIUG 25th anniversary gala dinner that was held on Monday, April 29th during the PIUG 2013 annual conference in Alexandria, Virginia.
