Travel and Tourism

Weather

Winter is the "rainy season" in California, which means that it might rain on any given day. Be sure to bring an umbrella or a rain jacket.

Temperatures in mid-February usually range from a high of 60F (16C) to 45F (7C) at night. A light jacket or sweater is recommended.

Tourism

If you want to extend your stay for a day or longer, there are many options for tourism in the area. Obviously the city of San Francisco is a popular destination, 20-30 minutes north by car or train. About 90 minutes north of the hotel you will find Napa and Sonoma counties, heart of the California wine country. You'll need a car to get there.

Yosemite National Park is about three hours from South San Francisco by car. While a winter visit to Yosemite is always beautiful, snow can close many roads and trails.

Coastal Redwoods are the tallest living things on earth, and you find redwood groves on a day trip from the hotel. South of the hotel, in the Santa Clara mountains, you will find Big Basin Redwood State Park. North of San Francisco you can find Muir Woods National Monument with very accessible hiking trails - the drive will take you over the Golden Gate Bridge as well.

Airports

San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is the closest airport

The Embassy Suites is just three miles north of SFO.

The Embassy Suites South San Francisco has a courtesy shuttle that runs every 20 minutes. The shuttle stop is at each terminal at SFO. Once you have collected your belongings, proceed to the departure/flight check-in level. Proceed outside and cross the center median where there is a Hotel Courtesy Shuttle Stop sign. Please note, between the hours of 11am and 1pm, the shuttle runs every 45 minutes.

A one-way taxi ride is approximately $15. The rental car facility at SFO is approximately half the way between the terminal and the hotel - you will not need to get on the freeway to get to the hotel.

San Jose Mineta International Airport (SJC) is 37 miles south of the hotel. It is possible to take a taxi or door-to-door shuttle. This link provides information on ground transportation options. A door-to-door shuttle can cost approximately $85.

Oakland International Airport (OAK) is located on the other side of the San Francisco Bay, approximately 28 miles by car.

The hotel does not provide a transfer service from this airport. It is possible to take BART from the Oakland Airport to the South San Francisco BART Station. The BART station is located across from the Terminal 1 baggage claim and transfers you to the Oakland Coliseum BART station. From the Coliseum station, you will want to board a train headed to Daly City, Millbrae, or SFO. The cost is $10.70. For more information on the BART schedule, please visit BART Fare Calculator and BART to Oakland Airport schedule. From the South San Francisco BART station, you can hail a taxi or utilize Uber, Lyft, or Sidecar. These apps can be downloaded to your Smart Phone.
