CHAIR: Suzanne G Robins - [Patent Information Services Inc.]

Biography: Suzanne Robins received a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from the University of Virginia in 1981 and a Master’s degree in Chemistry from Rice University in 1983. After joining the team of patent searchers at the Monsanto Patent Department in 1988 as an independent contractor she started her own company, Patent Information Services, Inc. in 1991. She conducts patent and literature searches for a wide variety of clients around the country. Suzanne is a member of the American Chemical Society, the Division of Chemistry and the Law, the Division of Chemical Information, and the Patent Information Users Group. She was Planning Co-Chair for both the 2005 and 2006 Annual Conferences and PIUG Vice-Chair from June 2004-June 2006. Her roles in PIUG prior to serving as Vice-Chair include PIUG Treasurer, Membership Chair, and Annual Conferences Registration Chair.

TREASURER: Ken Koubek - [Rohm & Haas Company]

Biography: The first 13 years of Ken's professional career was spent in the laboratory, 10 years of which he worked as a pesticide residue chemist at ICI Americas. In 1985, Ken accepted a position in their corporate research information department as a research information scientist. He worked 6 years in that capacity until 1991 when he went to Coca-Cola to oversee the technical information aspects of the research library. In December, 1998, Ken returned to a searching position with Rohm and Haas Company where he is currently employed as a Senior Information Scientist. Ken was the membership chair for PIUG from September 2001 until June 2004 when he was elected treasurer.

IMMEDIATE PAST CHAIR: Elyse Turner - [Merck & Co. Inc]

Biography: Elyse Turner is a founding member of PIUG and one of the members who originated the local meeting in the northeast. She wrote the original constitution and bylaws for PIUG and chaired the Bylaws Committee. She served as PIUG Secretary 1994-1996. The Electronic Communications committee was established by Elyse. She initiated and maintained the PIUG/PATMG DIALMAIL Bulletin Board then worked with Sandra Unger and Derwent to migrate and maintain communications on an Internet discussion list sponsored by Derwent. She also worked with Sharon Peterson to create the PIUG web pages and with Tommy Ebe for CAS to provide the server for the web pages. In 1999, she became the PIUG webmaster. In 2000, she received an Award of Appreciation for 12 years of championing and facilitating electronic communications within PIUG. She took on the planning for the 2001 PIUG NE Workshop and continued with planning for the 2002 and 2003 PIUG NE Workshops. She was involved in planning for the PIUG 2003 Annual Conference. Until June 2004, Elyse served as PIUG Vice-Chair and was the planning chair for the PIUG 2004 Annual Conference.

Elyse has been searching patents at Merck & Co., Inc since 1987. Before joining Merck, she was an intern at Bell Laboratories while completing her MLS at Rutgers University. She served on the Questel-Orbit Advisory Council 1996-2004. She has been a member of SLA since 1985. She received her undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Chicago in 1983.

DIRECTOR-AT-LARGE, 2000-2008: Sandra Unger - [ExxonMobil Research and Engineering Co]

Biography: Sandra Unger holds a Ph.D. in chemistry from Michigan State University and a Masters of Computer Science from the New Jersey Institute of Technology. In her 26 years at ExxonMobil Research and Engineering, her primary responsibilities have been patent searching and constructing databases to store, analyze, and distribute the results of patent searches. Sandra served as PIUG Chair from 1998 to 2000, and ran the PIUG annual meetings in 1998, 1999, and 2000. Sandra served on the PIUG Board of Directors from 2000 to 2004, and currently serves her second term on the PIUG Board of Directors from 2004 to 2008. Sandra has received a US patent on a database design for organizing patents and technical documents.

DIRECTOR-AT-LARGE, 2005-2008: Edlyn Simmons

Biography: Edlyn Simmons is currently serving as PIUG Director-at-Large. She was one of the founders of PIUG in 1988, and was its first elected Chair in 1990-1992 and a member of the Executive Committee in 1992-1994. She received B.S. and M.S. degrees in Chemistry from the University of Cincinnati and has been a registered patent agent since 1977. She is employed by Procter & Gamble Intellectual Property & Business Information Services as Section Manager, Patent Information. Edlyn has spoken and written extensively on patents and chemical information.

As a founder and active member for the entire history of PIUG, and a member of the Board of Directors for the last four years, I offer a deep institutional memory to the operation of PIUG, Inc. The organization has already succeeded beyond the expectations of the founders, but there is much work to be done to help PIUG mature into the world class corporation it has become. I hope that the members will give me the opportunity to help steer PIUG, Inc., into the future.
