The Patent Information Users Group, Inc. (PIUG) is a not-for-profit organization for individuals having a professional, scientific or technical interest in patent information. With the ever increasing volume of patents and related technical documents, the effective retrieval and analysis of patent information has become an essential skill in business. The mission of PIUG is therefore to encourage the development of patent information research and analysis systems, to further develop members' patent research and analysis skills, and to provide appropriate recognition for its members excelling in the field. Through this international forum and discussion, we promote and improve the retrieval, analysis and dissemination of patent information.

PIUG has over 700 members in 2008 including 440 patent information professionals who do patent searching for a corporation, 60 patent information professionals who do patent searching for law firms and 125 patent information consultants. PIUG members are employed in performing patentability, freedom to practice, and validity patent searches for Fortune 500 / multi-national companies, leading universities, and major IP law firms. Members also work for patent offices worldwide and for patent information suppliers and database providers. PIUG is an international group with members from dozens of countries around the world including Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, India, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK, Ukraine and USA. PIUG has a very active discussion list with over 1300 subscribers worldwide.

2007 PIUG Annual Conference Videos Available Online - 6 May 2008
Purchase of PIUG Annual Conference Video (2007) are available online as well as DVDs from 2006 and 2007. Non-members make purchases here. PIUG members receive significant discounts available from the members-only video purchase page. Sales of 2008 Annual Conference videos and DVDs will be available shortly after the conference.

New to the patent information field? Want to attend the 2008 PIUG Annual Conference to learn more? Apply now for the Brian Stockdale Memorial Award! - 6 March 2008
Anyone with less than 3 years experience in the patent information field can apply for the Brian Stockdale Memorial Award, which consists of free registration to the PIUG Annual Conference and associated workshops plus up to $2000 to cover travel expenses. If you qualify – or if you have a colleague who does – check out the details at the 2008 Stockdale Award webpage. The application deadline is March 10, 2008. Previous applicants may reapply by providing an updated essay.

2008 PIUG Annual Conference – Preliminary Agenda and Registration - 27 January 2008
The 2008 Annual Conference celebrates PIUG's 20th year and the 10th anniversary of the first independent, multi-day meeting. The conference will be held at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City (Virginia) May 17-22, 2008. Annual Membership Rates Update - 10 January 2008
As of January 1, 2008 new membership category has been established with a reduced annual membership fee of $20 (US) for students, retirees and those currently unemployed. In order to qualify for this discounted membership rate, one must either be a full-time student, retired full-time, or unemployed at the time of renewal. The regular annual membership fee for those not qualifying for the discounted membership rates described above is $40 (US). New and renewing members should use the the PIUG membership webpage to be eligible for all the benefits of PIUG membership.

PIUG Meeting Workshop Survey 2007 Results Available - 21 December 2007
A survey of the PIUG membership was conducted in November 2007 to gather information related to the workshops offered at our meetings. The intent of the survey is to determine if we are meeting the expectations of our membership (or their managers/companies) and to learn what changes we need to consider for future planning. Results are available to PIUG members via the Members-only webpage.

PIUG Boston Biotech Meeting Coming Up February 14, 2008 - 17 December 2007
We are very pleased to announce the second annual PIUG 2008 Boston Biotechnology meeting will be held on Thursday, February 14, 2008 hosted by Genzyme, Cambridge, MA. Due to space considerations this meeting is limited to 100 attendees (pre-registration required; no walk-ins). The focus of this one-day meeting will be sequence searching. See the Conference meeting page for more detailed information on presenting a technical talk (call for papers), sponsorship opportunities, and travel and venue details. Registration closes February 1, 2008. Registration fee is $50 US (members) and $90 US (non-members). Online registration is open.

PIUG 2007 Northeast Conference Papers - 26 October 2007
Once again the PIUG Northeast Conferences was a tremendous success with record attendance. Copies of papers, at least all of those for which presenter approval has been received, is available for PIUG members-only via this link.
