The International Society for Patent Information

The Patent Information Users Group, Inc. (PIUG) – The International Society for Patent Information is a not-for-profit organization for individuals having a professional, scientific or technical interest in patent information. The mission of PIUG is to support, assist, improve and enhance the success of patent information professionals through leadership, education, communication, advocacy and networking. Through this international forum and discussion, we also promote and improve the retrieval, analysis and dissemination of patent information.

PIUG has over 700 active members representing 27 countries including the United States. The largest concentration of members is from the USA, Europe and Japan. PIUG members are patent attorneys, patent agents, licensing professionals, patent information researchers, patent information vendors, and patent information and documentation experts from the U.S. and abroad.

We have nearly 300 patent information professionals who do patent searching for corporations, over 100 patent information consultants, over 80 patent information professionals who do patent searching for law firms, and about 20 searchers based in academic institutions. We are employed in performing patentability, freedom-to-practice, and validity patent searches for Fortune 500 / multinational companies, leading universities and major IP law firms. In recent years, PIUG members have also engaged in patent information analysis as a strategic innovation tool.

PIUG has an active Discussion Forum that is featured on the PIUG wiki, a global collaborative tool with with over 1400 subscribers worldwide and produce a newsletter twice a year. In addition, we have presence in professional and social networking channels, such as LinkedIn and Twitter. The PIUG newsletter contains members' articles, salary survey results, search tips, meeting trip reports, and information on patent database vendor and producer developments. PIUG 2012 Biotechnology Meeting in Boston, MA, on February 7, 2012 – Save the Date - 31 August 2011
Save the date for the PIUG 2012 Biotechnology Meeting to be held at the Merck Research Laboratories, Boston, MA. The theme is "Competitive Intelligence: Meeting Current Challenges in Biotechnology." PIUG 2011 Northeast Conference - Registration Now Open - 26 July 2011
The 2011 Northeast Conference will be held in New Brunswick, NJ, from Monday, October 10 to Thursday, October 14, 2011. Main Meeting Presentations and Exhibition will be on Tuesday, October 11. The other days will be vendor training and workshops. See the Conference meeting page for details including the Call for Papers, sponsorship opportunities, workshops, and travel and venue details. The PIUG "Patent Information Fundamentals" Course will be held on Thursday-Friday, October 13-14. Early Bird registration ends September 20; final online registration closes October 12, 2011. Early Bird registration fee for members only is $75 US and $140 US for non-members. Online registration is open.

PIUG 2011 Annual Conference presentations are available for viewing and downloading in the members-only section of the PIUG wiki. If you are a current, paid-up PIUG member, login to the PIUG wiki. If you still get an access-error message when trying to go to the PIUG 2011 Annual Conference Presentations page, you may not have been granted members-only privileges properly.
