WEDNESDAY, October 13

  • STN Patent Forum

    • 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM

      • The STN Patent Forum includes the following topics:

        STN Headlines
Keep pace with the latest STN news including new files, new features, and interface enhancements.

        Current-Awareness Searches in Patent Databases
A current-awareness search is a useful tool for the surveillance of specific research topics, competitors, inventors, patents, and legal status information. Refresh the searching skills needed to identify relevant information in a consistent and periodic manner and receive delivery of this information in the most efficient and useful format. Techniques for comprehensive current-awareness searching will be presented, with special emphasis on the importance of new STN patent databases, including Derwent World Patents Index First ViewSM, LITALERT, and FRANCEPAT. In addition, the most recent current-awareness enhancements to CAplusSM, Derwent World Patents Index®, and INPADOC will be discussed.

Non-traditional Sources of Patent Information on STN
Many look to STN for the wealth of patent information available. In fact, over 24 databases are included in the PATENTS cluster. Plus, patent information is available in over 55 additional databases on STN. The patent information available, and approaches to its retrieval, will be discussed for databases such as IMSPATENTS, PROMT, The Merck Index, Federal Register, NTIS, Research Disclosure, and various subject-specific databases. These alternative patent sources on STN provide valuable information supporting litigation, licensing, competitive assessment, patent status, and patent validity search activities.

Is It Novel? Is It Obvious? – Techniques for Searching and Analyzing Prior Art
In order for an invention to be patentable, it must be novel as defined in the patent law, i.e., it cannot be publicly known, used, offered for sale, published, or patented. Even if the invention is different from what is already known, a patent may still be refused or invalidated if the invention would have been obvious. Techniques for using STN’s content and tools to improve your search and analysis of prior art with respect to the novelty and obviousness of an invention will be discussed.

New Analysis and Visualization Tools in STN Express® with Discover!TM, Analysis Edition, Version 7.01
The new release of STN Express with Discover! builds upon existing features in the Analysis Edition. This session highlights:
          · Analyze Plus Wizard, which creates a customized, interactive version of your search results for both single- and multi-file searches
          · Data Group Tool, which automatically groups related author/inventor names and company names contained in your search results, allowing for cleaner, more streamlined tables and charts
          · Additional access to property data through the redesigned and enhanced Properties Wizard

    • This session is free. Registration is required. The Workshop will be at the Woodbridge Hilton. Registration begins at 8:30 am. The STN Patent Forum begins promptly at 9:00 AM. Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided.

  • To Register: Register online or send an e-mail to wksp@cas.org.
