2008 PIUG Call for Papers
We are pleased to announce the call for papers for the 2008 PIUG Annual Conference – Twenty Years of Patent Searching in a World of Emerging Technologies. The conference will be held at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City (Virginia) from May 17 to 22, 2008. This conference will mark PIUG's 20th year and the 10th anniversary of the first independent, multi-day meeting, also held in Crystal City.We are particularly interested to hear from information users within corporations, patent offices, law firms, universities and contractors who are able to discuss one of the following topics:
- Evolution of patent information in the last 20 years.
- Upcoming and proposed changes to the USPTO practices and their impact on patent research.
- Multi-national patent laws and their impact on patent research and analysis
- Identifying and quantifying “valuable” patents
- Finding and using patent litigation information
- Finding patent licensing / technology opportunities
- Identifying potential licensees or licensors
- Tips and techniques for searching and / or analysis in a specific technology area, especially electrical engineering and mechanical topics
- Philosophies on searching, screening, analysis or report writing
- Comparison of search output/reports for different clients or types of search
- Management or attorney perspectives on patent research and analysis
- Applying software tools, e.g. patent mapping software, to enhance or visualize search results
- Information dissemination by patent office(s)
Papers on other topics are also desirable, for example, papers falling into one or more of the following general categories:
- Expert Patent Searching
- Strategic Issues
- Business Impact of Patent Information
- Case Studies
- Choosing search tools and justifying the costs
- Comparison
of LSA and Boolean for a given search
- Best practices for Freedom to Operate
Markush Searching
- Free vs. fee-based databases

Please send your – presentation title, abstract, proposed speaker name,
company name, brief biography and full contact information to kartar.arora @
basf.com (remove spaces) on or before January 15, 2008, for full
consideration. Please use the
attached form in either format (Adobe PDF -
Microsoft Word).
If you think you may be interested in speaking but require
management approval beforehand, please let us know so that we can begin to
consider your general proposal for a paper in the meantime (submission of just a
few descriptive sentences will be sufficient).
The organizers reserve the right to accept abstracts at their discretion in
order to assemble the best possible program. Invited speakers may take
precedence over other speakers. Please be advised that your abstract submission
may be published on the Internet or elsewhere, shortly after receipt or at any
time thereafter. Therefore, do not include confidential or business-sensitive
information in your abstract.
If you would like to make a recommendation for a
speaker on a particular topic or suggest another topic of interest, we would
appreciate hearing from you. Please do not hesitate to contact the 2008 PIUG
Annual Conference organizers with your views.
