Part 1 will address issues of content (country
coverage, document kinds, year range, searchable fields) for the
principal free-of-charge Internet patent search engines,
including the USPTO, WIPO, JPO, esp@cenet, depatisnet and other
multi- and single-country sites. Afternoon session, 1pm-4:30pm
Title: Database coverage in commercial services
Part 2 will consider the same content issues for
the commercial database sector, both browser-based (MicroPatent,
PatBase) and commercial databases loaded on the principal
commercial vendors.
Questel-Orbit Workshop, 1:00-4:30pm, Instructor: David Dickens
Part One
Title: Questel-Orbit Innovations in Portfolio Management and Full-Text Scanning
This workshop will highlight Questel-Orbit's new venture in portfolio management and new products enabling users to quickly scan full-text patent records. PatentExaminer, our new product for portfolio management, which will be unveiled at this year's annual PIUG meeting, assists users in evaluating, managing, and distributing patent information. This new web-based product combines both full-text and bibliographic patent information as well as original patent drawings, with a patent valuation tool. PatReader, a new tool for quick and accurate scanning of full text patent data, will also be demonstrated.
Part Two
Title: Patent Analysis and Visualization Techniques using the anacubis Desktop Software
Questel-Orbit and Anacubis have partnered to enable patent professionals to easily load large patent data-sets, retrieved from QWEB or QPAT, into the anacubis Desktop for analysis. This session will cover how to use patent information from Questel-Orbit to produce visual interactive results for further analysis and dissemination. The new IP Analysis Add-in for the anacubis Desktop automates a wide range of common patent analysis tasks enabling the user to analyze complex patent portfolio information and extract meaningful intelligence in a fraction of the time that it would typically require. In addition to analysis of patent data, this session will also cover the consolidation of business information with patent information to further enhance understanding of the data.
To Register: Call the Questel-Orbit Help Desk @ 800-456-7248 or email the Questel-Orbit help desk.
SUNDAY, May 23
CAS Workshop, 8:30-12noon
Title: STN Express with Discover!™, Introducing the new features in the Analysis Edition (Version7.0)
Instructor: Kerry Stanley
Search, analyze, visualize, and discover the world of sci-tech information through the Analysis Edition of STN Express with Discover! This workshop will cover, using live demos and examples, the new and enhanced Discover! wizards, including the enhanced STN Analyze Wizard that utilizes the ANALYZE and TABULATE commands to provide pre-formatted Microsoft(r) Excel charts and the enhanced CAS Registry Number(r) Wizard that provides access to the functionality of the SEQLINK and POLYLINK commands. The new Variable Group (R-group) Analysis Tool lets you easily analyze substances. In addition, learn about the new query development tools such as the CA Lexicon interface and dictionary features, as well as enhancements for handling patent data in the Table and Custom Report Tools.
Attendance is FREE, but you must register in advance.

FIZ Karlsruhe Workshop, 1:00–3:00pm
Title: INPADOC on STN
Instructor: Rob Austin
INPADOC on STN comprises bibliographic and family data for patent documents and utility models of 71 patent issuing authorities and legal status data of 33 patent issuing authorities. This workshop will review the basic content and structure of the database on STN, provide advanced tips for retrieving and displaying patent family and legal status information, and cover the essentials of running automatic and manual Alerts/SDIs for both patent family and legal status updates. Techniques for classification and author abstract text searching will also be presented. In addition, the workshop will review fundamental changes made by the EPO to INPADOC Legal Status in September 2003, and offer up-to-date advice on the way in which Legal Status Alerts/SDIs should now be run in the file.

Thomson Scientific Workshop, 8:30-12noon
Title: Thomson Scientific Derwent World Patent Index(r) First View, IDdb, and Delphion offer timely access to critical information
Instructors: Jonathan Grant and John Myers.
Whether you need to establish patentability of an
idea or seek to knock out an obstructive patent, you need
comprehensive and timely information.
Experience the value of Derwent World Patent Index(r) First View,
the alerting companion file to DWPI and see best practices using
selected case studies, applications and shortcuts on STN and
Dialog. See how you can ensure complete coverage of patents
information in a timely manner using DWPI First View in
combination with DWPI, including tips on cross-searching these
files.
In the area of pharmaceutical innovation, you may need competitive
information. IDdb tracks your competitors' selected drug from its
first patent to eventual launch or discontinuation. Learn more
about the key features of this essential database.
In all areas of technology, fast-moving developments require a
patent resource to help track and analyze developments so you can
identify and grow business opportunities as they arise. A short
case at the end of the Workshop will show how Delphion can help
you cover all aspects of technological development, from first
patent application to grant and on to licensing or
discontinuation.
