Workshop
Registration Instructions: You must send in a separate registration form
and fee for this workshop; Microsoft
Word Form / PDF
Form.
Workshop Abstract: During this daylong session participants will learn
about the initiation of a patent analysis function at a Fortune 25
company. They will also discover the nuances of Patinformatics, a term
coined to encompass the breadth and depth of available patent analysis
methods. These lessons will be demonstrated through the use of pertinent
examples, case studies and group participation exercises. During the case
studies workshop, attendees can expect to see an example from the start of
the interview process all the way to the delivery and subsequent use of
the analysis work performed. Each example will include detailed
descriptions of the sources, software tools and methods used to accomplish
the result.
Expected Participant Background or pre-requisites: Participants should be
experienced patent searchers who are interested in learning more about
Patinformatics and how to initiate a patent analysis function in their
organizations.
Instructor: Tony Trippe
Anthony Trippe currently holds the position of Senior Staff Investigator,
Intellectual Property at Vertex Pharmaceuticals. He is responsible for
designing and implementing patent intelligence and mapping activities at
Vertex and for assisting with the leveraging of IP within and external to
the company.
Previously, Mr. Trippe was Practice Director, Intellectual Property
Consulting for Aurigin Systems Inc., where he was responsible for
developing Intellectual Property Consulting Services as part of the
Aurigin Consulting group. Tony's role included designing and implementing
IP solutions for Aurigin customers and additional organizations around the
world that were interested in IP research solutions.
Prior to Aurigin Systems, Mr. Trippe was Technical Intelligence Manager
for the Procter and Gamble Co., where he was responsible for managing work
processes and analytical tools pertaining to Technical Intelligence and
R&D decision support.
Mr. Trippe was also with Technology and Patent Research as a Patent

and other assorted prior art searching for clients on a contract basis. He
spent three years with Chemical Abstracts Service as Southwestern Regional
Marketing and Training Consultant, and five years working as a Synthetic
Organic Chemist in the biotech/pharma industry in San Diego, California.
The highlight of Mr. Trippe's career as an Organic Chemist included the
synthesis of the first 500g GMP batch of Viracept for Agouron
Pharmaceuticals. This material was used in the Phase One human clinical
trials of Viracept, which is currently the number one prescribed HIV
protease inhibitor in the United States.
Mr. Trippe is one of the incorporators of the Patent Information Users
Group Inc. (PIUG Inc), a member of the Society of Competitive Intelligence

This workshop will explore technology sector analysis using multiple forms
of patent analytics including inventor, expiration, licensing,
infringement, competitive and portfolio analysis. Multiple factor
analysis, cross-correlation and relationship mapping strategies that allow
further visualization of the Derwent World Patents Index data will be
shown and discussed.
We will identify the changes in patenting activity over time within the

the next, and to determine whether the technology is driving the company
or if the company is driving the technology - and how to understand the
difference.
The focus of the exercise will be to illustrate how to assist departments
such as R&D, Licensing, General Counsel, IP Legal, CI & BI and
Human Resources in their work. There will be Q&A periods throughout
the session with the intention of making it an interactive analytics
experience.
